Weekly Prayer of Thanksgiving
Counting Blessings
It is surprisingly easy to scroll through the struggles of the past week and instantly forget the grace that sustained us. We often focus heavily on what we didn’t get done or the difficult conversations we had, pushing gratitude to the side. Taking a moment to pause and reflect shifts our focus from our insufficient circumstances to His sufficient provision. Whether it was a quiet morning, a friend’s smile, or a moment of divine intervention, acknowledge the good.
When we count blessings, we are actually “spiritual inventory,” reminding ourselves that God has been faithful even when we were looking elsewhere. This simple habit invites peace into your soul before you even drink your coffee. It changes the narrative of your week from “what is wrong” to “what is right.” Make a conscious effort to enumerate at least three specific things you are thankful for today.
Scripture on Thanksgiving
The Bible serves as a powerful anchor for our hearts when we feel overwhelmed. Scripture commands us to return thanks, not just as a polite gesture, but as a weapon against worry and stress. Psalm 107:1 reminds us to give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, and His lovingkindness is everlasting. Let these verses be the foundation of your heart this weekend.
Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding, promising that He will make your paths straight. Furthermore, Colossians 3:17 instructs us to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Holding onto these promises helps us see the wood behind the trees.
A Weekly Prayer of Thanksgiving
Dear Father in Heaven,
Thank You for the breath in my lungs and the privilege of saying Your name today. I thank You for the lessons learned last week, even when they were difficult. Forgive me for my grumbling and help me to see Your hand in the mundane. I place my worries down and pick up gratitude instead. May my words be sweet and filled with Your grace today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Questions
Why is gratitude important in the Bible? Gratitude is presented as a response to God’s character rather than just our circumstances. Scripture consistently links thanksgiving to a heart of trust and joy, helping believers maintain perspective during difficult times (Psalm 118:1).
Does God hear prayers of thanksgiving? Yes. The Bible indicates that God delights in the prayers of His people. An attitude of thanksgiving is often pleasing to Him because it focuses on His faithfulness and provision (Psalm 50:14-15).
How do I maintain a thankful heart during a tough week? You rely on the Holy Spirit to help you shift your focus. Instead of looking at what is wrong, intentionally look for one small thing that is going well. Pray for help in gratitude, just as you would pray for help in faith.
Can I use this prayer if I am going through a personal loss? Absolutely. While gratitude can feel difficult when we are hurting, thanking God for His faithfulness and asking for His comfort is a powerful way to process grief and connect deeper with the Father (2 Corinthians 12:9).
